CLEANING AND STORING YOUR LEATHERS

SPECIAL NOTE: We recommend regular cleaning of your leathers, as this process conditions as well as cleans your leathers, making them last longer.

We have taken into consideration the costs of having leathers cleaned and have learned that the high costs are usually related to the cleaners having to remove linings and replace them. Decorations also must be removed and replaced. Learning that the costs are increased for these reasons, we have lined our garments with materials compatible with the leather cleaning process to minimize your cleaning expenses in our leathers. We also try to make our embellishments easily removed and put back on. (This consideration was arrived at through contacting the premier leather cleaners in the U.S., who service museums, the entertainment industry, as well as government officials.

Whichever season, you store your leathers, it is HIGHLY recommended you roll the item in cotton or linen (an old sheet works well) and store it in a closet on a shelf. Do not pile things on top of the leathers. Rolling items in a sheet helps preserve moisture content, protects from dust, and keeps it from becoming dry and brittle, which leads to cracking. Once leathers crack, nothing can be done to repair those areas. Folding leathers create dry areas prone to cracking and also, the leather discolors along fold lines. Even cleaning doesn’t remove fold line discoloration. Only re-dying is a possible remedy. (We recommend not having to resort to this solution.)

If you must hang your leathers, store them in a cloth bag, similar to a suit or dress bag, made of cotton, muslin, or linen. Also hang them on a padded hanger, as this helps prevent fold (hanger) lines and distortions to the shoulders of leather.
